Defense Ministry: Most leaders of Al-Qaeda killed

23/4/2012 - Yemen's Defense Ministry has stated on Sunday that most leaders of al-Qaeda were killed in the southern governorate of Abyan.

The ministry said in its online site that most veteran leaders of Al-Qaeda killed and others escaped to other governorate.

Meanwhile, clashes have been continuing between Ansar Al-Shariah, al-Qaeda-linked group and the Yemeni army in the outskirt of Zinjibar.

Local sources affirmed that the Yemeni army could capture large parts of the town that has been considered the main stronghold of Ansar Al-Shariah.

The Defense Ministry affirmed that it will expand it operations to purge Abyan of Al-Qaeda, ensure the return of the displaced persons, and resume security and stability to the city.

Military sources had said President Abdu Rabo Mansour Hadi ordered to send military reinforcements to fight Al-Qaeda amid an objection to use US drone in the military attacks by some members of parliament.

Gerald Feierstein, the U.S. ambassador to Yemen, during a press conference at the embassy on Sunday attributed the army’s progress to changes made by President Abdurabu Mansur Hadi in the military’s leadership.
