A suicide bomber on Saturday killed six soldiers and wounded 20 others as he targeted a security checkpoint in the governorate of Abyan.

Militants of al-Qaeda attacked last Wednesday a checkpoint of the Yemen army located between the port of Shaqrah and al-Wade'a town in Abyn governorate, claiming a number of casualties.

The Yemeni army backed by the Arab Coalition managed to liberate large swaths of Abyan from al-Qaeda militants in August 2016.

From time to time, militants of al-Qaeda attack security and military checkpoints in Abyan governorate and neighboring areas.

In last December two suicide bombing killed dozens of soldiers in the southern Yemeni port city of Aden, which the ISIS group's Yemen-based affiliate claimed responsibility for.

Soldiers were queuing to collect salaries near a military base in the Khor Maksar district when the attackers blew themselves up.
