Alsahwa Net- The Sam Organization for Rights and Liberties called on Sunday for immediate release of all detainees in the Houthis-run prisons amid growing spread of the Covid-19 in detention centers.
The organization said in a news release that the spread of the coronavirus represents a serious threat on safety of the detainees particularly with no clear plan in place by the Houthis on health measures in prisons.
It indicated that the situation is very alarming because the Houthis responded to the spread of Covid-19 with more security measures and ignored the UN calls for the release of the detainees.
Sam said that it learned that seven detainees who were being confined in one room of the Central Prison were confirmed having the Covid-19 symptoms.
It added that one infected detainee was taken to the Kuwait Hospital and the others were diagnosed at the prison with no information on the tests’ results yet.
It quoted a medical source of the prison that the prison’s clinic was changed into an isolation center for the Covid-19 patients coming from the detention rooms.
The source said that 30 detainees were transferred from the Central Prison to the Political Security Prison among them inmates who suffer from the Covid-19, according to the organization.
The source added that no instructions have been issued yet on physical distancing or any other health measures to prevent the spread of the infection.
No single human rights organization has visited the detention facility since the appearance of Covid-19, the source said.
