Yemen's health officials have raised alarm over rising diphtheria cases, reporting 22 deaths and 380 infections in government-controlled areas since 2025 began.
According to official statistics, Lahij governorate recorded the highest number of deaths with 6 cases, while Abyan governorate reported the most infections with 63 cases. Taiz governorate recorded 2 deaths and 44 cases.
Marib governorate also reported 4 deaths, including 2 in October, and 57 suspected cases since 2025 started.
Health officials warn that actual numbers may be higher in Houthi-controlled areas due to lack of vaccination programs, posing a serious threat to children's lives. They urge activation of vaccination campaigns to prevent further spread.
